Karmann Ghia

Volkswagen was a catalyst of sorts for German production cars and remains deeply ingrained in Germany’s automobile history. Volkswagen was aptly named the ‘peoples car’, after being commissioned to produce Germany’s first economy car that was accessible to all people- the Beetle. Car ownership was rare in this era due to a limping economy and a market primarily dominated by sports cars, then the war ended and the standard of living was increased alongside the economy, which prompted Volkswagen executives to add a halo car to their lineup. They commissioned Wilhelm Karmann for the design, a coachbuilder, who in turn contracted the famous Italian firm Ghia.

The Karmann-Ghia initially cost $2,245, which was $900 more than the Beetle and quite expensive for the time. This was the result of craftsmanship on tier with high end manufacturers. In contrast to the Beetles machine-welded body with bolted-on fenders, the Karmann-Ghia’s body paneling was butt-welded, hand shaped, and smoothed with English pewter in a time consuming process. The cabin featured a sportier dashboard and was furbished with high quality seats that rendered the new halo visually incomparable to VW’s old economy car.

The Karmann-Ghia was introduced to America in the early 1950’s. The Beetle was still relatively new here, but the Karmann-Ghia offered a welcomed image refresh for Volkswagen. Sumptuous Italian styling, quality workmanship, and durable mechanisms were evolved from the ever reliable Beetle and gave the Karmann-Ghia significant value and appeal.

This special Volkswagen was easy to buy and service, unlike most foreign sports cars, because many areas of the country had a conveniently located VW dealer.  Many of these Karmann-Ghias have survived to this day, but mostly in warmer climates without salty, rust-inducing roads.

Karmann-Ghias have been steadily gaining notoriety as collectible classics. The average cost of one in good shape has nearly doubled in recent years, but good deals are still bound to be had. Now would be an excellent time to capitalize on the rise in popularity of this classic before the price becomes legendary.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle

The iconic Beetle stands against the winds of change, and retains its unique charms generation after generation. This year, the Beetles design is a tribute to the original- with retro interior styling and an overall refreshing simplicity. The 2-door hatchback is available in seven trim levels; including iconic limited edition models and a powerful R-Line that are certain to broaden the appeal of this unique car.

With the exception of the performance oriented R-Line model, all of the bugs will be equipped with a 1.8 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The peppier R-Line possesses a more robust 2.0 L turbo engine with an output of 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with 6 speed automatic transmissions.

Your standard Beetle may look delicate; but this bug is protected by seven stability-enhancing systems and comes standard with Intelligent Crash Response System, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert, and Park Pilot. The 2017 Beetle upholds a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).

The Beetle offers variety and customization like no other car; it’s sold as a coupe and convertible, offers a vast color scheme, can be badged with your nickname of preference and has custom ambient lighting in the cabin. For the particularly stylish driver, Volkswagen introduces us to the limited edition #PinkBeetle and Beetle Dune; two very distinctly styled bugs that are sure to catch quite a bit of attention. The #PinkBeetle sports a Fresh Fuchsia Metallic paint job and quaint pink plaid seats, while the Dune gets a slight lift, bigger wheels and an adventurous design reminiscent of the Baja bugs of the 70’s.

Although the bugs stature may seem minute, the interior offers plenty of space for passengers of all sizes. The leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel and straightforward control center with an upgraded touchscreen display make for seamless cabin navigation and connectivity. The interior is plush and comfortable overall and features an air of nostalgia that emanates from heritage inspired touches like the retro-modern gauges and the Kaferfach glovebox.

Volkswagen clearly understands the importance of staying true to your roots. The iconic Beetle design, fundamentally unchanged for over 20 years, continues to withstand the test of time and gracefully retain its relevance in the market.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2017 Jetta is Volkswagens versatile compact car that offers a spirited engine lineup with radical acceleration and excellent gas mileage. Whether you lean towards prominent efficiency or exciting performance, the Jetta offers an engine to suit your tastes without any major compromise. Jetta S and SE models come with a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers good acceleration and great efficiency, while the Jetta SEL uses a larger, 1.8-liter turbo-4 that has more punch yet still offers good fuel economy.

Considering Volkswagens origin as the catalyst economy car in Germany, the Jettas conservative and sensible overall design is quite apt. The classic Volkswagen design is straightforward and efficient, and the Jetta isn’t trying to convince anyone of anything. The impression of the Jetta is confidently left to be had from the actual experience, rather than any perceived aesthetic.

The Jetta may be compact, but the cabin provides much more space than similar compact vehicles and offers generous trunk space as well. Jetta seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Heated leatherette seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are optional. For installing car seats, the Jetta’s standard LATCH system includes lower anchors on both outboard rear seats and tether anchors on all three rear seats.

Infotainment is provided by a 5-inch color touch-screen system that incorporates AM/FM/CD player with SD and USB ports, and Bluetooth phone connectivity. For $3,000 more, the SE model includes power sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats, larger touch-screen display with phone app features, faux leather seating, push-button start and premium wheels.

If you’re looking for a safe, economical commuter and want more than a lethargic sedan, you should buy the Volkswagen Jetta. All of its engines are turbocharged, with outstanding fuel economy from the base four-cylinder and exhilarating acceleration from the top-line Jetta GLI. Though the Jetta is categorized as a compact car, you’ll get almost as much passenger and trunk space as a midsize car. Regardless of the evident value, the Jetta’s starting price is below the average cost of a compact car.

2018 Atlas

Volkswagon first introduced the 2018 VW Atlas concept at the CrossBlue concept preview back in 2013. The Atlas is an entirely new 3rd row SUV- the largest and most U.S. oriented model that VW has released thus far.  After much anticipation, the 2018 Atlas has finally been released in the US. You can expect to start seeing the Atlas’ arrive at VW dealerships this spring.

The 2018 Atlas will be available with two engines; a 238-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is the standard offering, but you could opt for the upgraded 280-hp 3.6-liter VR6 for a little more power behind your punch. Each will pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. All four-cylinder models will feature front-wheel drive, while the VR6 will be available with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The Atlas’s 4MOTION system features a drive-mode selector that offers Snow, Sport, On-Road, and Off-Road settings for maximum control in all driving conditions.

Atlases will feature integration of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. VW’s reconfigurable digital screen that replaces analog gauges, called Digital Cockpit is on the options list, as is a 12-speaker Fender audio system that VW claims is the most sophisticated Fender system yet to appear in one of its vehicles. Also offered will be a slew of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, and lane-departure warning with steering assist. There’s also post-collision braking, which applies the brakes when a crash is detected, helping reduce the risk of a secondary collision.

The exterior and interior design of the Atlas are both very linear and forthright. The front fascia is wide and square, with a large windshield that’s thankfully unhindered by meddlesome side pillars that you’d often find on a wide body SUV. The standard LED headlights add a welcomed bit of refinement to the otherwise aptly rugged appearance. The spacious cabins overall design in just as candid and simple as the exterior, but that’s not a bad thing. The linear dash and minimal control buttons offer a composed, calm cabin environment that isn’t seen much elsewhere in an SUV. Each row offers a quiet, comfortable ride in exquisitely plush seats.

Volkswagon is taking strides in a refreshing direction by offering a brand new SUV with a lot to offer various lifestyles, and by expressly appealing to the American market. The long awaited release of the Atlas has many SUV deliberators on the cusp of making the switch to an avidly capable vehicle that will suit their unique lifestyle no matter what the current situation may be. If you’re ready to explore a new innovation- one thats nicely catered to you- you’d be wise to check out the Atlas. 2017 Atlas - Weekend Edition

According to Business Insider’s Ben Zhang Volkswagen has a major problem on their hands. No, we aren’t referring to the widely known emissions scandal that rocked the automotive world last year. The trouble we are referring to is Volkswagens struggle to sell to American buyers. Zhang reported “Through November, the Volkswagen brand managed to move just 286,000 cars — down 10% over last year while representing a minuscule 1.8% share of the US auto market. All the while in Europe and Asia, VW is one of the most competitive brands in the market."

Some believe the solution is SUV’s. Volkswagen presently has two SUV’s in their lineup – Tiguan and Touareg; but what many believe the automaker needs is a LARGE SUV. Volkswagen heard the cries and they responded by introducing a third SUV to their lineup.

Que the Atlas.

2017 Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Edition

Expected to arrive later this year, the atlas entered production at the company's Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. Zhang wrote "With three rows of seats and room for seven, the Atlas is expected to be a savior for VW's struggling US business". Until then, VW faces the task of drumming up enough enthusiasm for the vehicle is a US market where seven-passenger SUVs are available in abundance from other carmakers.

One special version of the Atlas – “the Weekend Edition” is one way Volkswagen is looking to draw excitement for the new SUV. Features like the modern pop-up roof— “Urban Loader cargo box" when empty “offers a sleek, minimized appearance.” Zhang says that “When needed for hauling, it can expand to a 17.7 cubic-foot container.” attached to the already diverse base carrier bars. So why wait any longer? Sign up for updates and be the first to drive the all-new 2017 Volkswagen Atlas!
